Management Bios
John R. Mulvihill
John R. Mulvihill is President and Chief Executive Officer of The Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company of Canada. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Company. Mr. Mulvihill joined HSB BI&I in 1990 in Toronto. Following an assignment in Montreal from 1992 to 1995, he was appointed Director of Technical Operations. He was appointed Assistant Vice President in 1997, Vice President in 2000 and Corporate Secretary in 2004. He has held various executive management roles, including responsibility for engineering, claims, inspection and most recently special risks and strategic planning. Previous to joining HSB BI&I, Mr. Mulvihill worked for the Bank of Nova Scotia, Dofasco and a mining consulting company. Mr. Mulvihill has an MBA and an engineering degree from the University of Toronto. He is a graduate of the Institute of Corporate Directors - Directors Education Program. He is a member of the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers and is a Chartered Insurance Professional. Mr. Mulvihill served on the Industry Advisory Council to the Ontario “Technical Standards and Safety Authority” from 1998 to 2006. He has volunteered at the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management – Integrative Management Challenge 2004-2006 as well as with their mentorship program. He also coaches minor hockey.
Brenda Crookshank
Brenda Crookshank is Chief Financial Officer for The Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company of Canada. Ms. Crookshank joined the finance department at BI&I HSB BI&I in 1991 and was appointed Corporate Controller in 1998. The Board of Directors appointed Ms. Crookshank an Officer of the company in 2001 as Assistant Vice President of HSB BI&I. She was promoted to the position of Vice President in 2004 and Chief Financial Officer in 2010 and is also responsible for information systems at HSB BI&I. Prior to joining HSB BI&I, Ms. Crookshank held various accounting positions in both public accounting and industry sectors, including over 10 years experience in management accounting. Ms. Crookshank is a Certified General Accountant, holds an MBA from York University and is a Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional with the Insurance Institute of Canada.
Dave Picot
Dave Picot is Vice President and Corporate Secretary. He is responsible for Field Operations at The Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company of Canada.
Mr. Picot originally joined HSB BI&I in 1981as a marketing Marketing Services Coordinator in Toronto and was promoted to regional representative for Manitoba/Northern Ontario in 1984. In 1986 Mr. Picot left HSB BI&I to join Reed Stenhouse Limited where he held various marketing, sales and management positions over a 10 year period. Looking to get back into Equipment Breakdown insurance, he joined the Kemper Insurance Company of Canada as a Senior B&M Underwriter (B&M) in 1996. In 1997, Mr. Picot rejoined HSB BI&I as Toronto Branch Manager and was promoted to Director in 2003. The Board of Directors appointed Mr. Picot Assistant Vice President in 2004. He was promoted to Vice President in 2006.
Mr. Picot has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Western Ontario. He earned a Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation in 1989 and a Fellowship of Chartered Insurance Professional (Honours) designation in 2006, both from the Insurance Institute of Canada. Mr. Picot has been a guest lecturer for the Insurance Institute of Canada and served 2 terms on the Insurance Bureau of Canada’s National Underwriting Committee. In addition he recently served as a Little League coach in the Town of Oakville for 3 years.
Derrick Hughes
Derrick Hughes is Vice President of The Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company of Canada responsible for our Client Company business within our Reinsurance Assumed Division. Mr. Hughes is also responsible for Marketing and Advertising for the company.
Mr. Hughes joined HSB BI&I in 1995 as a Marketing Service Co-ordinator and then advanced into a Marketing Representative role in 1997, based out of Toronto. In 2000, Mr. Hughes was promoted to Client Company Manager, and was responsible for a portfolio of client companies. In 2005, he was appointed National Client Company Manager—Marketing, Advertising and Business Development Strategy; in 2007, he held the position of Director—Reinsurance Assumed; and in 2009 he was promoted to Assistant Vice President—Reinsurance Assumed. Mr. Hughes holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Trent University, Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) and Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional (FCIP) designations from the Insurance Institute of Canada, a Canadian Risk Management designation, and a Management Certificate from the University of Toronto. Mr. Hughes is a frequent speaker, conducting Boiler and Machinery seminars for the Insurance Institute of Canada and the Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario.
Jean Dubois
Jean Dubois is Vice President of The Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company of Canada responsible for our operations in Quebec and for the Manager and staff in the Toronto office. He also oversees Client Company business in the Province of Quebec. Mr. Dubois joined HSB BI&I as an Office Representative in 1987. Over the ensuing years he progressed to roles of increasing responsibility at Head Office, Quebec City, Montreal becoming Toronto Branch Manager in May 2004. Mr. Dubois was appointed Assistant Vice President in December 2006.
Mr. Dubois holds a BBA from Laval University, an MBA from the Université du Québec à Montreal, is a CRM and a Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional. Mr. Dubois also assumed significant leadership roles within the Insurance Institute culminating as the head of the Quebec Institute from 1998 to 1999.
Brian Storey
Brian Storey is Assistant Vice President of The Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company of Canada responsible for Special Risks and Claims. Mr. Storey was involved with the development and launch of HSB BI&I's Equipment Breakdown policy for Course of Construction insurance business. Mr. Storey joined HSB BI&I in 2001 as Manager of the Special Risks Department, became Director in 2003 and was appointed Assistant Vice President in 2006. Mr. Storey has over 30 years of experience in Boiler and Machinery, Construction and other Commercial lines of business, both in the U.K. and in Canada. Prior to joining HSB BI&I, he held various positions of increasing responsibility at a major insurer. He managed various lines of business, including Boiler and Machinery. Mr. Storey is active in the Canadian Boiler and Machinery Underwriters Association (CB&MUA) and has served as Chairman. He is also involved with the International Machinery Insurers Association (IMIA). Mr. Storey holds a BA in Economics from Victoria University of Manchester in England and is a Chartered Insurance Professional.
David Pivato
David Pivato is Assistant Vice President of The Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company of Canada responsible for Underwriting.
Mr. Pivato joined BI&I in August of 1991 as a Claims Adjuster in the Head Office. Following nearly five years in Claims, Mr. Pivato joined the Toronto Branch Marketing team. In 1998, Mr. Pivato assumed the position of Underwriter in the Head Office Underwriting Department and held positions of increasing responsibility over the years, becoming Director of Underwriting responsible for BI&I’s underwriting and reinsurance risk management program in 2010. The Board of Directors appointed Mr. Pivato Assistant Vice President of Underwriting in 2011. Mr. Pivato is an involved member of the HSB Group Global Underwriting Committee, the Canadian Boiler and Machinery Underwriters Association (CBMUA) and the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC). Mr. Pivato is a Professional Engineer and holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Toronto. He is a Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional (FCIP) and holds a Canadian Risk Management designation.
Barbara Hanley
Barbara Hanley is Assistant Vice President of The Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company of Canada responsible for Inspection and Engineering.
Ms. Hanley joined BI&I in 2005 and has worked as a Claims Adjuster, an Area Manager and as Inspection Manager. Ms. Hanley was promoted to Director, Inspection and Engineering, overseeing both the Inspection and Head Office Engineering departments in April 2009. The Board of Directors appointed Ms. Hanley Assistant Vice President in 2011. Ms. Hanley has many years experience in engineering, licensing and leadership positions in the chemical and manufacturing sectors. Ms. Hanley holds an MBA from York University, a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Lakehead University, a National Board Commission, and is a Professional Engineer and a Chartered Insurance Professional.
